Interesting notes about the letter H:

  • The letter H is the eighth letter of the English alphabet. It is a consonant.
  • It makes two sounds, a hard \ h \ as in hawk, or it is silent, as in hour.
  • When next to g, it can make an \ f \ sound as in enough or be silent, as in highfalutin.
  • Next to the letter p, it makes an \ f \ sound as in graph.
  • The letter H was “Heth” was a guttural sound used by the Phoenicians in 500 B.C. or so.
  • The Greeks used it as their vowel eta (H), and then the Romans updated it to H.

  • Hamster: short-tailed Old World burrowing rodent with large cheek pouches
    • My mom has a phobia of all rodents, including hamsters.

  • Highway: a major road for any form of motor transport
    • In the old days, carriages broke their axles on highways full of ruts from the rain.
  • Hospital: a health facility where patients receive treatment
    • When I went to the hospital, I saw my new baby sister.
  • Henhouse: a farm building for housing poultry
    • We had to make sure none of the wolves got into the henhouse.

  • Hesitant: lacking decisiveness of character; unable to act or decide quickly or firmly
    • He was hesitant to open the door after hearing strange voices in the room.
  • Heroic: having or displaying qualities appropriate for heroes
    • He semmed heroic after he saved her from detention.

Words that describe an idea

  • Highfalutin: affectedly genteel
    • These ideas are fairly highfalutin for people who simply want to relax.
  • Hopeful: having or manifesting hope
    • Even after missing the bus, she was still hopeful she’d make it to class on time. 

Words that describe a place/event

  • Haunted: inhabited by or as if by apparitions
    • Our store is haunted by a mischievous spirit that likes to move things.
  • Hazardous:  involving risk or danger
    • The chemicals at the apartment made it hazardous. 
  • Heated: made warm or hot (`het’ is a dialectal variant of `heated’)
    • The heated jacuzzi immediately relaxed her muscles.
