  • The letter Z is the twenty-sixth letter of the English alphabet.
  • It is a consonant.
  • It normally makes one main sound \z\ as in zebra and dizzy.
  • The Phoenicians used what looked like a horizontal capital H for their sound zayin, which might have stood for sword or another type of weapon.
  • The Greeks then used it for their letter zeta (Z).
  • The Romans took it for their last letter of the alphabet Z.

    • Most zebu have two tones of color on their fur.

  • Zodiac:  a belt-shaped region in the heavens on either side to the ecliptic; divided into 12 constellations or signs for astrological purposes
    • The most well-known constellation of the zodiac is the Big Dipper, which is part of Ursa Major or the Great Bear.
  • Zoo: the facility where wild animals are housed for exhibition
    • Our class went on a field to the zoo today, and we saw lions, tigers, and bears. Oh, my!

  • Zealous: marked by active interest and enthusiasm
    • My parents are sometimes too zealous when they attend my basketball games.
  • Zappy: (informal) lively or energetic.
    • It was hard to keep up with the zappy kindergartners.

    • She had a zillion ideas on how to decorate the holiday cards.

    • It was a zany idea to try to keep the toddlers clean while they ate ice cream.
