  • The letter U is the twenty-first letter of the English alphabet; it is a vowel.
  • It has a long sound as in unicorn or vacuum and a soft sound as in hut or put.

  • Unicorn: an imaginary creature represented as a white horse with a long horn growing from its forehead
    • In the movie “The Last Unicorn,” a bad guy is trying to trap a mythical  unicorn that was changed into a young girl.
  • Uakari: medium-sized tree-dwelling monkey of the Amazon basin; only New World monkey with a short tail
    • The uakari typically have red faces and red, brown, black, or white fur.
  • Unau: a sloth of Central America that has two long claws on each forefoot and three long claws on each hindfoot
    • The unau moves pretty fast for a sloth.

  • University: a large and diverse institution of higher learning created to educate for life and for a profession and to grant degrees
    • The university at which I worked offered degrees from colleges such as a school of business, communication, and a school of law.
  •  Utopia: ideally perfect state; especially in its social and political and moral aspects
    • Many people wish they could live in a perfect place such as Utopia, but it may be hard for people to behave perfectly enough to do so.

  • Underdog: one at a disadvantage and expected to lose
    • Although he was the underdog in the race, he had many fans that were cheering for him. 
  • Upbeat: pleasantly (even unrealistically) optimistic
    • The upbeat girl’s attitude was infectious and soon everyone was happily playing the board game. 
  • Unartistic: lacking aesthetic sensibility
    • Unlike her sister, she was unartistic and preferred  to study accounting.

Words that describe an idea

  • Ubiquitous: being present everywhere at once
    • Since cheating was ubiquitous throughout our school, teachers used tables instead of desks and wouldn’t let students have any kind of bag with them.
  • Unachievable: impossible to achieve
    • It was unachievable to think that all 30 kids would ride the pony in one hour. 
  • Useful: having a useful function
    • His marketing ideas were always very useful and succedful.

  • Urban:  relating to or concerned with a city or densely populated area
    • Urban areas are thought to be more dangerous than country areas because there are so many people crowded together.
  • Umbrageous: filled with shade
    • It was much cooler under the umbrageous tent than out on the beach. 
  • Ugly: displeasing to the senses
    • The ugly and creepy estate was the perfect setting for our Halloween Haunted Mansion.
